The client runs an online fundraising platform that experienced rapid user growth and a significant increase in transaction volume. As the platform gained popularity, the existing infrastructure struggled to keep pace with increasing demand while maintaining the reliability and security expected of a financial services application.
The application was built with Ruby on Rails and hosted on AWS Elastic Beanstalk. While this architecture supported the platform during its early stages, continued growth required a more scalable, secure, and maintainable cloud platform capable of supporting frequent releases and evolving compliance requirements.
The rapid growth of the platform exposed several architectural and operational limitations. AWS Elastic Beanstalk no longer provided the flexibility or scalability required to support increasing traffic and frequent application deployments.
The AWS environment had been provisioned manually over time, resulting in inconsistent infrastructure, limited visibility into configuration changes, and no reliable mechanism for reproducing or auditing the environment. This significantly increased operational risk and made infrastructure maintenance increasingly difficult.
As a fintech platform processing sensitive financial information, security was a primary concern. The client required stronger infrastructure protection, centralized management of sensitive configuration, encrypted services, and an operational model capable of supporting industry compliance requirements. At the same time, database performance and application availability needed to improve to accommodate continued growth without affecting the user experience.
We redesigned the client's AWS platform by migrating the existing Elastic Beanstalk deployment to a Kubernetes-based architecture running on EKS.
To eliminate the risks associated with manually managed infrastructure, we rebuilt the entire AWS environment using Terraform. Networking, Kubernetes cluster and in-cluster components, databases and supporting AWS services were defined as Infrastructure as Code, providing version-controlled, repeatable deployments and complete visibility into infrastructure changes. Terraform code manages multiple environments (development, staging and production) with the same resource definitions due to modular and extensible design.
The underlying AWS networking was redesigned with high availability and automatic failover to improve resilience and eliminate single points of failure. To strengthen the platform's security posture, we deployed Suricata as an intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS), providing continuous monitoring and protection against network-based threats.
Application delivery was fully automated through custom GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines and Helm charts developed specifically for the platform's services. This established a standardized deployment process that enabled reliable, repeatable releases while reducing operational overhead and deployment risk.
To ensure the database can perform well under increasing load and remain stable, we converted the existing database into a highly available cluster with read replicas. This increased resilience while distributing read workloads more efficiently, allowing the platform to accommodate growing traffic volumes without compromising responsiveness.
Due to the platform specifics, Security was integrated throughout the platform. Encryption was enabled across all AWS services, runtime configuration was separated from sensitive credentials, and secrets management was centralized using AWS Secrets Manager. This ensured sensitive information remained protected while simplifying secure application deployments across environments.
We established a structured and documented process for regular infrastructure and software upgrades, ensuring the platform remained reliable and maintainable. Combined with the new cloud-native architecture and security controls, these improvements enabled the client to successfully achieve PCI DSS compliance, providing a secure foundation for continued business growth.
